The Funzi Keys – South Coast, Kenya

South Coast of Mombasa, Kenya

Tucked away on an unspoilt island in the Indian Ocean, yet only 15 minutes flying time from Mombasa, The Funzi Keys unique appeal is its luxurious seclusion and beautiful natural scenery. Surrounded by water and superbly located on a west-facing beach with glorious views of the African sunset, this remote and exclusive hideaway is the perfect place to escape from the outside world in style. Designed to blend unobtrusively with its idyllic beachfront setting and to reflect the influence of the local culture and coastal architecture, the accommodation consists of nine spacious sea front cottages set along the high-water line and eight sea view cottages, all constructed of stone and thatch with large netted windows open to the balmy sea breezes.

Kenya coast
Kenya's north coast, one of her most popular beach holiday destinations, offers clear blue sea, marine parks, excellent water sports, coral reefs, monsoon winds, numerous hotels and beach resorts, family vacations, sun n sand, cultural and beach travel and more. Close to Mombasa, it is also within easy reach of Malindi, Lamu, Diani and many other popular Kenya safari resort hotels.

Location and seasons
Diani beach is 25 miles south of Mombasa. Kenya's stunning coastline (485 km from Nairobi) runs 700 km between the Tanzanian and Somali borders and is renowned for its silken white sandy beaches, coconut palms, sheltered lagoons, pellucid blue waters, remote islands, uncharted mangrove swamps and mysterious Arab and Swahili ruins, many of which date back to the 8th Century AD. An idyllic climate cooled by the monsoon, the Swahili coast offers a daily average of 8 hours of sunshine, and the hot steamy climate is tempered by the monsoon winds: the south-easterly Kusi, which blows from April to October; and the north-easterly Kaskazi which blows from November to March.

The background
Kenya's pristine and well-developed coral reef extends virtually without break from Shimoni in the south to Malindi in the north, some 230 Km in total. The reef is broken only in a few places by river mouths and creeks; and of these the deepest and most sheltered safe channels through the reef are those that lie on either side of Mombasa Island.

Accommodation
There are just nine cottages. Each of the individually designed rooms has a hand carved king-sized four-poster bed and is furnished with local wooden artefacts and colourful fabrics. Beachfront cottages additionally have a jacuzzi with spectacular sea view! All cottages are provided with fans, safes and beach accessories in the oversized bathroom. In front of each cottage is a private sitting area where guests can enjoy a drink and watch the sun go down in total privacy.

D ining and bars
At the heart of The Funzi Keys is the informal yet stylish main building, where guests can relax and enjoy refreshing drinks served from the dhow-shaped bar or sample delicious island fare featuring freshly caught seafood and locally grown fruits and vegetables in the upper-level restaurant that overlooks the water.

Child-friendly
The resort welcomes children.

What to see and do
The activities on offer include swimming, snorkeling, sea kayaking, diving, water sports, dhow trips, glass-bottom boat trips, nature trails, butterfly farms, places of historic interest, visits to the nearby Shimba Hills (a coastal national park with plentiful elephant) or to the world-famous Arabuko Sokoke Forest, one of the last of the rainforests.

Other attractions
Life at The Funzi Keys is relaxed and many guests do little more than unwind on the Mazeras stone deck of the 45m free-form pool with a drink while watching the local fishing dhows sail by.
For more energetic guests it is possible to enjoy sailing, creek fishing, windsurfing and canoeing or perhaps take a boat trip up the Ramisi River or Funzi Creek for an unforgettable glimpse of kingfishers, crocodiles and even dolphins!
Our hotel is an excellent base for deep-sea fishing and scuba diving in the Pemba Channel, which can be arranged and paid for locally.
