Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda... the place for gorilla trekking enthusiasts
Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is located at the base of Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park, home to the endangered Mountain Gorillas. The lodge is approximately 2 hrs drive from the capital Kigali, through an exquisitely beautiful and picturesque countryside with unsurpassed biodiversity.
Set at the foothills of the Sabyinyo wilderness, the lodge enjoys panoramic views of Rwanda's volcano mountains, and serves as an excellent stay for gorilla trekkers.
The lodge offers accommodation in 30 ensuite cottage rooms, laid out in contemporary African setting. Being at an altitude, the lodge can get pretty chilly in the evenings. The lodge's surroundings are richly adorned with various flora and bird species, superb for nature lovers and birders alike.
Location
Two hours' drive northwest of Kigali City, through a picturesque countryside; the lodge is located at the base of the Sabyinyo Volcano approximately fifteen minutes from the Volcanoes National Park offices - about 1km away.
The Background
Located in the Virunga Mountains, magnificent chain of dormant volcanoes in the North of Rwanda, the Volcanoes National Park forms part of the extension of the Congo-Nile divide, separating two of Africa´s most important watersheds. They´re also home to the world´s last surviving mountain Gorilla populations, currently a mere 700 individuals. This stunning backdrop is host to over half the world's wild mountain gorillas.
The exhilarating climb to the gorilla's natural habitat of shady bamboo foresters fantastic views in all directions and explores the rich ecosystems of blending evergreen and bamboo forests, open grass-lands, swamps and health. Hiking in Virunga takes one through an ecosystem composed of four major vegetation zones: bamboo, Hagenia and Hypericum forest, sub-alpine and Afro-alpine. There is nothing more joyful than encountering a fully grown silverback gorilla, up to three times the size of an average man, yet remarkably peaceable, playful and tolerant of human visitors.
Accommodation
The lodge offers accommodation in 30 simple and comfortable cottage rooms in 19 double rooms, 5 twin rooms and 6 VIP cottages. The rooms are spacious and ensuite, with a large sitting / lounge area and offering simple amenities.
