Tarangire National Park, Tanzania, East Africa
Oliver's Camp is situated in a remote wilderness zone in the southern sector of Tarangire National Park. Adjacent to an area known as Monyonyo Pools, the camp is ideally placed to observe the yearly migrations of wildlife throughout the ecosystem, and to view the impressive concentrations that gather at the water holes.
Because the camp is in a wilderness zone that is not governed by the normal rules of a national park, the camp can also offer such additional pleasures as walking safaris through the endless woodlands and plains habitat that surrounds the camp. Similarly, Oliver's Camp's trained guides excel in off-road driving in specially adapted open-sided safari vehicles. Offering just eight luxury tents and an intimate dining area, the camp prides itself on its air of exclusivity and privilege.
The Tarangire National Park
Tarangire, named after the Tarangire River which runs through it, is an arid haven, peppered with ancient baobab trees, towering termite mounts, and home to huge herds of elephant. Only 30km from the Rift Valley escarpment, this national park falls outside the nutrient-rich volcanic belt and therefore its annual rainfall is very low (550mm). As a result, much of the national park is semi-arid, dominated by baobabs, acacias and Doum Palms, often festooned with the nests of African palm swifts.
Luxury tented safari camps in Tanzania
When on safari in Tanzania, the traditional luxury safari camp offers a selection of canvas-sided safari tents, usually with thatched roofs, often raised on a timber platform with private verandah. Usually, the luxury safari tents feature comfortable double or single beds with mosquito netting, electric lighting (generator or solar powered) and luxury en-suite safari bathrooms (flushed WC, hot and cold running water, shower and vanity unit).
Location: Tanzania luxury safari camp
Oliver's Camp is located inside the Park on the east side, about 3 hours game driving from the main gate and approx. 45 minutes driving from the nearest air strip (Kuro). Oliver's Camp provides transfers to the nearest air strip. Other transfers can be arranged on request. Transfer to/from the camp is normally included in safaris arranged by professional tour operators. The Tarangire National Park lies at the core of the much larger Tarangire Conservation Area (TCA), which extends across the Maasai Steppes. This area was once used for trophy hunting until it was restored to the traditional Maasai owners in the late 1990s.

The Tarangire area has distinct seasons. Oliver's Camp operates in Tarangire National Park for the period June to March. It is in this period that the concentrations of wildlife in the park reach stunning levels as migratory herds of wildebeest, zebra, buffalo and elephant move inside the park in search of the park's water sources. This is provided by the Tarangire River and the Silale swamp. Lions, leopard and other predators follow their steps closely.
