Lake Nakuru National Park - The Great Rift Valley, Kenya
The Sarova Lion Hill Game Lodge stands on a wooded hill (Lion Hill) overlooking Lake Nakuru. Situated above the lake and ringed by forests of Euphorbia Candelabra and acacia, the lodge commands a stunning view over the lake and beyond to the Menengai Crater and the Aberdare range.
Location
Lake Nakuru is 160 kms north of Nairobi and lies at the heart of the Great Rift Valley. Nearby are the lakes of Elementaita, Naivasha and Bogoria.
The Background
Sunk deep in the cleft of the Great Rift Valley, one of earth's most phenomenal geological features, ringed by shoals of extinct and dormant volcanoes and presided over by the Menengai Crater, one of the largest craters in the world, lie the turquoise-shimmering waters of Lake Nakuru. Flamingo-frosted, salt-encrusted, acacia-haloed and guarded by the prehistoric splendour of a grey-green forest of Euphorbia candelabrum, Lake Nakuru National Park offers sanctuary to some of the world's most endangered creatures.

What to see and do
Shimmering mirage, flamingo realm
Entitled ‘the greatest bird spectacle on earth' thanks to the millions of fuchsia-pink flamingo that flock to feed on the teeming algae of its alkaline waters, the pink-frosted shores and sky-mirrored waters of Lake Nakuru yield some of the most evocatively beautiful photo-images in Africa. Small in size, but high in wildlife, this park makes the ideal day trip, en-route to other destinations and abounds in picturesque lookouts and picnic spots. As Kenya's first and largest rhino sanctuary, sightings of both black and white rhino are almost guaranteed, while plentiful waterbuck, warthog, zebra, gazelle and buffalo graze the shoreline. Echoing to the haunting cries of the numerous fish eagles, this is also the park in which you have the best chance of seeing a leopard.
Wildlife highlights: lion, black and white rhino, waterbuck, hippo, leopard, impala, gazelle, hyena, wild cat, golden cat, hyrax, colobus monkey, and Rothschild's giraffe. Birds: 1.5 million flamingos and 450 other recorded species.
Other attractions
The lodge has a charming pool deck with sun loungers and separate tented spa where massages, aromatherapy and beauty treatments are offered (plus sauna). Game drives around the park can be arranged with picnic lunches as can ‘sundowner trips'. The resident naturalist can lead nature walks or bird-spotting tours in the immediate vicinity of the lodge - or in the park as a whole. Immediately adjacent to the chalets is the lodges own hilltop lookout with a small chalet where exclusive lunches, dinners or sundowners can be staged. The hills is also an ideal spot in which to encounter rhino and buffalo. Within easy (half an hour) reach of Nakuru town, with its many restaurants, bars and nightlife, the lodge serves as an excellent base for visits to the town and to the surrounding sights, such as Hyrax Hill Prehistoric Site, and the Menengai Crater. Gift shop, laundry, medical services and forex facilities provided.
