A luxury retreat, Rhino River Camp is located in the eastern foothills of the Kenyan Highlands within 80 acres of privately owned wilderness on the edge of the Meru National Park.
The real Born Free country, famous haunt of Joy and George Adamson and home of Elsa the lioness, Meru contains a diverse range of habitats and is traversed by thirteen perennial rivers flowing from the Nyambeni Range.
Kenya hotels and accommodation
Amongst the wide range of Kenya hotels, some make the ideal Kenya safari destination. Choose a safari lodge, safari hotel, bush camp, luxury lodge, safari camp, tented camp or bush lodge. National park accommodation usually takes the form of a traditional safari lodge or tented camp, but numerous other options exist on the park boundaries. Luxury lodges and luxury camp options are also offered in the private wildlife conservancies.
Location
On the western border of the Meru National Park, Rhino River Camp is located around 120 miles north-east of Nairobi in beautiful open country on the banks of the Kindani river. Access is possible by car on sealed tarmac road arriving at the park's main gate, or by scheduled or chartered flight landing inside the park with a (complimentary) 40-minute transfer to our camp - a scenic journey that often offers the visitor a first look at the area's big game.
The Background
Affectionately known as Kenya's complete wilderness, Meru National Park plays host to an abundance of wildlife, from rare exotic birds to big game such as elephants, lions, cheetahs and leopards, and rhino. An environment that is normally dry, as is most of Northern Kenya, is transformed by the thirteen perennial rivers flowing through it, which originate in the Nyambeni Hills to the west. These waters are the main reason for the Park's spectacular diversity of wildlife and landscapes.
Accommodation
A collection of just eight luxury cottages made out of canvas and local hardwood are set amongst the trees of the pristine forest bordering the Kindani River. Spacious and comfortable, each room has a view over the river and its huge raffia palms, yellow fever trees, and tamarinds. The camp meets most of its energy needs through solar and hydro-electric power, using the abundant sunshine and flowing rivers of the area to full advantage. We operate a scheme whereby the communities of the surrounding villages receive a percentage of the profits made by the camp, ensuring that our local community benefits from our presence in the area. Furthermore, we empower the local community by employing local villagers wherever possible.
Dining and bars
At the heart of the camp is the dining area, bar and lounge. Our swimming pool is nearby, built above the contour of the riverbank and surrounded with comfortable wooden decking. The camp offers fine cuisine prepared by our experienced, creative chefs in the camp or on one of our luxuriously set bush meals.
Child-friendly
The camp welcomes children.
What to see and do
Within the Camp guests can enjoy the sights and sounds over 180 species of different colourful birds, together with resident mammals that include Syke's monkeys, baboons, dik diks, bush babies, porcupines, and the occasional bush buck. Meru N. P. is also home to species as reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, and Oryx which are not to be found in many other National Parks or areas in Kenya.
Meru National Park and the surrounding bush play host to an extraordinary array of wildlife. Our four-wheel drive vehicles and professional guides are at your disposal to explore the bush at your pace, and to enjoy a vivid, personal connection with some of the magnificent creatures that call this area home. A range of other activities are available on and off camp, including bush walks, mountain biking and visiting the villages of the peaceful and friendly Meru. A separate cottage devoted to massage and other spa treatments completes the facilities available to our guests.
